The date and location, traditions of the inauguration, the resignation of the government are in the Kommersant material.

Vladimir Putin, who won the Russian presidential election on March 17, will take office for a fifth term on May 7. According to Art. 82 of the Federal Law “On the Election of the President of the Russian Federation” of January 10, 2003, the term of office of the elected president begins six years from the date of assumption of office by the current head of state. In 2018, Vladimir Putin assumed presidential powers on May 7.

Appointment of the Prime Minister

The next day, May 8, the State Duma will consider the issue of appointing the chairman of the government. He is appointed by the president after the State Duma approves his candidacy. The President must submit a candidacy for consideration by the State Duma no later than two weeks after taking office.

In accordance with Art. 116 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, the government of Russia, headed by the chairman, resigns its powers to the newly elected president of the country. The corresponding decision is formalized by government order on the day of the inauguration of the head of state. At the same time, members of the Cabinet of Ministers continue to perform their duties until the formation of a new government.

Article 82 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation requires that the newly elected president solemnly take an oath, the text of which is recorded in the Constitution. During the inauguration, symbols of presidential power are used, such as the standard and sign of the President of the Russian Federation, as well as a special copy of the Constitution.

Until 2000, the inauguration took place in the Kremlin Palace of Congresses (now the State Kremlin Palace), in subsequent years – in the St. Andrew’s Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace. Guests are also accommodated in the adjacent Alexander and St. George halls.

Guests of the ceremony

Those invited to the inauguration of the President of the Russian Federation are determined by the Presidential Protocol Service. Members of the government, members of both houses of parliament, heads of the presidential administration, judges of the Constitutional Court, members of the Central Election Commission, and representatives of the diplomatic corps are required to participate in the ceremony.

Also among the guests of the ceremony may be holders of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called, Heroes of Russia, holders of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, I and II degrees, representatives of the business community, representatives of the main religious denominations, members of the election campaign headquarters and proxies of the president, as well as representatives of various public organizations and associations.
