Manchester United have pulled off a coup by luring Omar Berrada from cross-town rivals Manchester City as their new chief executive – and Red Devils fans are excited after documentary footage re-emerged.
Berrada has been announced by United as the club’s new chief executive, meaning he will leaving his post as chief football operations officer for City Football Group, which oversees City and several other clubs around the world.
It is one of the first big moves made by the INEOS group and new shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, whose bid to own 25% of United and oversee the club’s football operations is in the process of being completed.
Footage from a City documentary has remerged on social media in which Berrada discusses the Etihad Stadium’s wages in comparison to major European rivals with the club’s director of football Txiki Begiristain.
Berrada said: “In the end, here is about keeping talent, maintain the balance – and the other viewpoint is salaries.
“When you look at salaries, we’re high up, but in the end we’re sitting fourth in Europe.
“So above us are United; Barca which – they’re now cleaning house and lowering (salaries) a little bit; PSG, which they’ve gone up due to the signing of Messi.
“And the other thing I would mention is that in the end, what we need to look at is how much this represents versus the revenues.
“We’ve always maintained ourselves at 60-61%, which in the end the industry requires in order to be a sustainable club.
“And we’ve kept ourselves between these levels.
“We know that when you win, you have the pressure from players and agents, where they’re always asking for more salary.
“You need to resist, to maintain the balance of keeping players because of their on-pitch performance, but at the same time we also need to maintain a structure and stability.”
When hearing comments like that, it is no wonder why City have become the dominant force in English and now European football.
And United fans reacting on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, have been clear with how excited they are at Berrada’s appointment and the impact he could have at Old Trafford.
One person wrote: “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited for this era of SJR, wow this is HUGE.”
Another posted: “Alright am sold. Bring him in.”
A third wrote: “We are so back.”
A fourth said: “We are winning the league next season for sure.”
A sixth wrote: “Absolutely massive.”
A seventh person added: “We’re gonna cook.”
Of course whether Berrada can replicate City’s success at United remains to be seen, but it certainly sounds promising for the Old Trafford club.
