Manchester United lost for the fourth time in seven Premier League games this season as Crystal Palace claimed a 1-0 win on Saturday.
The Red Devils beat the Eagles 3-0 on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup to give themselves a much-needed boost following a difficult run of results that included a home loss to Brighton & Hove Albion that ended their long unbeaten stretch in league play at Old Trafford.
Yet they looked far from the confident team that dispatched Roy Hodgson’s men in midweek and, after Joachim Andersen’s stunning opening goal silenced Old Trafford, they found it extremely difficult to break down a resilient and organised Palace side who had won just one of their previous five league games.
Mason Mount missed the pick of the chances in the second half, while Sofyan Amrabat hit the crossbar — although the referee seemed to have stopped play by the time he struck his shot — and a couple of handball shouts were waved away despite vociferous appeals.
The result means United are 10th after seven games and it already looks like a title challenge is beyond them once again this season.
