The season is just ten games old for Manchester United and already six have ended in defeat, although that only begins to tell the story of another remarkable night of self-sabotage in the Champions League and a team falling apart.

For Erik ten Hag this defeat to Galatasaray, United’s second in Europe this season, had all the hallmarks of a crisis. A lead thrown away twice, Andre Onana, his pick as goalkeeper at the heart of the biggest problems, and the third red card of Casemiro’s Old Trafford career as he tried to solve them. For a few minutes at least it looked like it could be a night of triumph for his new £75 million striker Rasmus Hojlund, but the Dane is beginning to understand just what a troubled club he has joined.

He scored twice, his first goals at Old Trafford, and yet there was such chaos at the other end it looked like it might never be enough. So it proved – there was a first half goal from United old boy Wilfried Zaha, and two further in the second half from the fine Galatasaray playmaker Kerem Akturkoglu and then from their expensive Argentine striker Mauro Icardi. He plundered a winner with less than ten of the regulation minutes to play.
