South Korea hope to keep their Asian Cup magic alive as they take on Jordan in the semifinals of the 2023 Asian Cup.
Jurgen Klinsmann and the Taeguk Warriors have sweated out each of the last two matches, scoring extremely late equalizers against both Saudi Arabia and Australia to force extra-time, advancing on each occassion
Last time out, Tottenham star Heung-Min Son pulled the strings against the Socceroos, winning a 96th minute penalty which Hee-Chan Hwang dispatched to level the score, before bagging the winner in the first half of extra-time.
South Korea also needed a late leveler last time these two teams matched up, as they played to a 2-2 draw in the group stage thanks to a 91st minute own-goal.
With all other pre-tournament title favorites knocked out by this point, South Korea will fancy their chances to lift the trophy, but will need improvements up front to avoid suffering the same Asian Cup disappointment which has befallen the other continental strongholds Australia, Japan, and Uzbekistan.
While conventional wisdom says South Korea will emerge victorious as the better team on paper, Jurgen Klinsmann’s side has flirted with disaster too many times so far this competition to be trusted. The attack has been stifled throughout the 90 minutes and only seems to be capable of a vital breakthrough once added time has begun.
As other top teams in Asia also falter across the bracket, South Korea stand alone as the final pre-tournament favourite remaining amongst the semifinalists, but they too could suffer disappointment here if they continue to suffer from anemic production up front and rely instead on late magic.

South Korea vs Jordan best bet
- Pick: Both teams to score — YES
- Odds: +130 (Sports Interaction)
Jordan have been shut out just once this competition, a 1-0 group stage defeat to Bahrain, otherwise able to score 10 goals across their other four matches, including two against this very South Korea side. They don’t have a true talisman up front, but three players on Jordan have multiple goals this tournament, and can prove a threat.
The Taeguk Warriors, meanwhile, have conceded at least one goal in all five of their matches so far this tournament, including multiple goals in three of them. There’s plenty of reason to believe that The Chivalrous will manage a breakthrough, and South Korea should at least get one as well, even if it’s late. Whether they’ll get enough, however, is another story.
South Korea vs Jordan prop bet
- Pick: Jordan double chance
- Odds: +140 (Sports Interaction)
While South Korea’s late turnarounds have been fun to watch, over the course of a competition proper it is an unsustainable approach to matches. Surely, Jurgen Klinsmann will wish to have matches wrapped up far sooner than the 95th minute if he had his way, but they’ve been left to sweat it out time and again.
On the whole, the South Korea attack has been stifled for much of the tournament. Entering the competition boasting the most formidable front line in the entire Asian Cup, they were held to just a single shot across the first 75 minutes against Australia. They missed three “big chances” against both Saudi Arabia and Malaysia the two games before, and in general the killer instinct has been missing.
At this point, the Taeguk Warriors are who they are, and if Jordan can take lessons from those who faltered at the death against South Korea before, they will be well equipped to avoid late slips as those in prior rounds did.
