England fans who attach flags to their cars could be fined, it has been reported.

Whenever the Three Lions are competing in a major tournament, fans up and down the country show their support by decorating their houses with the St George’s cross.

You will see flags draped out of windows but another popular way of getting behind Gareth Southgate and the team is while driving.

People often stick flags at the very back of the vehicle but those doing so must take plenty of care.

That’s because, according to Metro, if the flags are not fitted properly – they could be deemed to be an obstruction.

That may result in a hefty fine which could be as expensive as £2,500 with a court appearance.

Officers have the power to issue an immediate £300 fine for an unsecured load should an incorrectly applied flag be the cause of damage.

Flags larger than A4 are viewed as the most dangerous in blocking a fellow driver’s view, as per guidance from 2010.

The guidance reads: “It is not a specific offence to fly a flag on a vehicle and the majority of vehicle flags currently on sale are legal, provided they are fitted to the vehicle in a sensible manner.

“However, it is worth noting the following points: flags which are so large that they obscure the driver’s view of traffic ahead of the vehicle may contravene Regulation 30 of The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986.

“Flags which are constructed or positioned in such a way that they can cause danger to pedestrians or other road users could contravene Regulations 53 or 100 of the above regulations.”

With four points from their first two games, England return to action on Tuesday when they face Slovenia in their final Group C fixture in Cologne.
