Eddie Howe is being slammed for his ’embarrassing’ interview after Newcastle’s defeat to Liverpool

Eddie Howe has been slammed by fans after comments made on the back of Newcastle United’s defeat against Liverpool.

The Magpies travelled to Anfield on Monday night looking to start the new year off on a high against league leaders Liverpool.

However, they left with nothing after a brace from Mohamed Salah plus goals from Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo sealed a 4-2 win.

Alexander Isak and Sven Botman got themselves on the scoresheet for Newcastle.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Howe felt Newcastle were hard done by after having two penalties awarded against them and having a spot-kick appeal waved away by the officials.

Howe said: “A lot happened. Action-packed game. We’re disappointed with the way we defended.

“I didn’t think the second one was a penalty. And I did think Sean Longstaff’s one before that was.

“It shouldn’t be given. Martin has pulled his hand away. He’s had two steps before going down. For me, it’s not a penalty. Even in the first one, the contact was so minimal. We feel hard done by.”

He continued: “You have to have the mindset that you create your luck. Feeling sorry for yourself never has any positive outcome.

“The players gave everything. I back the quality of the group. In time we’ll get the results we need.”

Reacting to Howe’s interview on social media, one fan said: “What’s embarrassing is Eddie Howe saying the first one wasn’t a penalty so u can catch someone in the box and think it’s not a penalty.”

Another tweeted: “Liverpool had 30+ shots and they feel it was the decisions that cost them.”

A third fan added: “What’s his thoughts on Joelinton getting away with a yellow in the first half?”

Someone else wrote: “Does he feel hard done by that Joel Linton was never sent off having had many yellow card offences not called?”

On the back of their defeat by Liverpool, Newcastle stay in ninth place in the Premier League table.
