Matt paid tribute to his mum on his social media platform with a selection of stunning pictures.

The ice skater revealed in the caption that he has struggled to come to terms with losing her over the past week, and has reflected on when life ends.

Matt said: “What is grief? How do we grieve? Why is so death final?
As I sit here at Heathrow, this is not the flight that I ever wanted to take.

“This past week we lost my mother.

“No…not my birth mother but a woman who accepted me as her own at the age of 5 and never stopped loving me as if I was hers.

“I was blessed with two mothers in this life and now both of them are gone.

“This week has been incredibly difficult to deal with for obvious reasons but for reasons I never expected. We need to talk about grief more… well at least I do.”

The star then reflected on how his life will change now that she’s not here anymore.

Matt continued: “Life has an end. Its final. When your time comes… that’s It folks. End of story.

“I will never see her again. She will never annoy the f*ck out of me, she will never be the first to comment on my posts nor will she be there to give me a hug when I walk through their front door and say I love you.”

Matt then confessed that he felt “guilty” about sharing posts about his birthday when he had lost his mum.

He explained: “How do we grieve? How should we grieve? It was my birthday this week as you probably have seen from all the spam but.. should I be feeling guilty being out having fun with my friends?

“I didn’t want to cancel plans.

“I really struggled with this however I told myself that if your last breath is just one inhale away…then I needed to go out and enjoy my time with my friends and I know that Mom would have wanted that for me.”

“To those of you who are supporting someone grieving or if you are that person to someone in the future. Just be there.

“You may not know what to say or do and the only advice I can give is just sit, stand or lie next to them even if in silence.

“My tribe were exactly who I needed them to be this week and I love them more now than ever just because they were there.”

Ending the touching post, Matt said: “Lesson: GO LIVE YOUR F***ING LIFE AND LOVE YOUR PEOPLE HARD.

“DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY BECAUSE THIS COULD BE THE LAST POST YOU EVER READ.

“ps. I love you Mumma.”

Matt joined Dancing On Ice in 2006.

Fans were shocked when the star revealed he had quit the show after 17 years in October 2023.

In a statement, he said: “I have some news to share. I knew this day would come at some point but I won’t be returning to Dancing on Ice this series.

“After 15 series of the show it was sadly time to hang up the skates for now. I have loved every minute of it (honestly!)

“I’ve had some incredible partners over the years and we have created some fantastic TV moments!

“I mean who can forget that fall from Gemma, or the wardrobe malfunction from Pamela!”

He added: “And I was honoured to make history with H as the first ever UK same sex televised partnership.

“To all my leading ladies (and H) it was a pleasure! Bonnie Langford, Lara Bingle/Worthington (Australian Dancing on Ice), Lisa Scott Lee, Suzanne Shaw, Zoe Salmon, Heather Mills, Denise Welch, Jorgie Porter, Pamela Anderson, Candice Brown, Gemma Collins, Ian ‘H’ Watkins, Denise Van Outen, Faye Brooks, Sally Dynevor and Patsy Palmer.

“I’ll miss each and everyone on the show, in front and behind the camera – and all of you the fans too!

“But of course I’ll be watching and commenting – which I can now be totally 100 per cent honest about so watch out – haha!

“I’m writing this from the West Coast of the US in sunny Los Angeles – but I’ll definitely be back in the UK very soon so watch this space!

“This isn’t a goodbye but a ‘see you very soon.’”
